Seniors Defeat Portumna 03-06-2017

Turloughmore 2-17
Portumna 0-18

Turloughmore Senior Hurlers defeated Portumna in Round 3 of the 2017 Senior Hurling Championship on Saturday 3rd June in Duggan Park Ballinasloe.
The game ebbed and flowed throughout with Portumna having the best of the opening exchanges in the first half playing with the elements.

Turloughmore took time to settle into the game and keep within reach as Portumna went into a 4 points to 2 lead after 10 mins with  two points from Ronan Badger. After 15 minutes, Portumna went 6 points to 3 ahead and pressed on even further by going 8 points to 3 ahead after 22 mins with the Cannings, (Joe and Ollie)leading the way for the East Galway outfit. Paul Dullaghan also made a fine save from Damien Hayes to keep a reasonable gap between the sides in the early part of the game.

In the lead up to half time, Turloughmore thundered into the game with points from Ronan Badger, Fergal Moore and Sean Linnane with the gap closing to three points at the interval 0-8 to 0-11. Four minutes additional time were played in the first half due to the fact that there were a number of flareups and flash points in the first half which reflected the tense nature of the tie.

The inclement weather arrived at the start of the second half with the rain and wind blowing up into the faces of the Turloughmore men.

In arrived Jamie Holland for Michael Morris and he immediately cut a sublime sideline ball over the bar from under the stand to close the gap further after 35 mins.

After Damien Hayes and Eoin Lynch pointed for Portumna, Turloughmore won a penalty which was brilliantly executed by Ronan Badger leaving the sides level at 1-10 to 0-13 after 40 mins.

Portumna replied with a Joe Canning free and a Kevin Hayes point followed by a Matthew Keating and Jamie Holland (free) points to leave 1 points between the teams with ten minutes remaining (1-12 to 0-16).

The sides were level again on the 55th minute after fine points from Sean Linnane and Sean Loftus with the game now in the melting pot.

Jamie Holland pointed another free and following a sideline cut, Matthew Keating diverted the ball to the net for a tonic goal with time now up. Sean Loftus followed up with another fine point as well as a fine Daithi Burke effort to see out the game for Turloughmore.

Martin Dolphin was shown a straight red card for Portumna at the death following an altercation with Barry McDonagh.

Overall this was a hard fought victory for Turloughmore who were much improved after their second round defeat to Gort and leaves them in a solid position in the group.
