U16s win Shield Final

Turloughmore 3-16, Salthill Knocknacarra 2-8

Turloughmore won the U16 A Shield in Athenry on Monday evening after overcoming a well drilled Salthill Knocknacarra side. Played in splendid sunshine, Salthill started well and went into an early 0-2 to 0-0 lead. It took Turloughmore until the 10th minute to score through a Mark McGrath point, though 8 first half wides served to make Turloughmore’s task more difficult.

Points from Conor Walsh (2), Diarmuid Mullen and Mark McGrath had Turloughmore 0-5 to 0-3 ahead before Dara Whelan flicked home a delightful goal to extend the lead. Walsh added a point before Mark McGrath slotted Turloughmore’s second goal on 27 minutes and thus at the interval Turloughmore led by 2-7 to 0-4.

Turloughmore lost influential centre back Jack Glynn through injury at the break, with Conor Walsh going to centre back for the second period. Salthill Knocknacarra, coached by Eamon O Shea, again started well and shot the opening two points, and saw a penalty yield no dividend. Indeed both sides were to rue a number of missed chances during the hour.

Turloughmore responded when sub Jack Hurney did well to goal and Mark McGrath quickly added a point to build a 3-8 to 0-6 lead on 37 minutes. Salthill shot two points, but Turloughmore scores from Shane Burke, Dara Whelan, Jack Hurney & Conor Walsh had the winners 3-13 to 0-8 ahead on 52 minutes. Salthill did finish strongly and they shot 2 goals late on, though Matthew Lyons, Rob Dunleavy and Jason Reilly did answer with late points to see Turloughmore victorious on a 3-16 to 2-8 score line.

Afterwards Padraig Lohan presented the Shield to Turloughmore captain Diarmuid Mullen, while Mark McGrath received the Man of the Match award from sponsor Tom Monaghan. Well done to all concerned!
