Lackagh NS Take Second Title in a Week
Scoil Bride of Lackagh created a unique piece of history in the parish when they became the first national school in the parish to win the schools hurling and football titles in the same year. It was a special time for Lackagh children, teachers and parents as they recorded two successful county title wins in a week.
For Lackagh school this is the sixth national schools title since turning the millennium having won five hurling titles and one football title. To win the second hurling title in succession as well as the football, is a special tribute to school principal Michael Lydon and his staff who carry out such wonderful work within the school. Michael has dedicated his life to education and sport and the success is just reward for his efforts.
From the outset the Lackagh team started magnificently against a Cappataggle team that refused to give in. Lackagh captain Barry Callanan had the ball in the Cappataggle net in the first minute to give the Lackagh side a tonic start and settled them into the game quickly. Although Cappataggle replied with a point, Lackagh eased the pressure when Karl Conneely set up Matthew Lyons for a wonderful goal. A brilliant save at the other end by Lackagh goalkeeper Dylan Buckley withheld Cappataggle pressure but they were rewarded when a long free dropped into the top of the net.
When Matthew Lyons fired over two successive points for Lackagh, it helped stop the Cappataggle dominance that wasn’t help by wayward shooting. Lackagh were far more constructive in attack and Tomas Quirke and Barry Callanan added points before the break to send Lackagh into a 2-4 to 1-1 half time lead.
Karl Conneely kicked a third goal for Lackagh at the start of the second half and although Cappataggle replied with a brace of points, the Lackagh side always held the advantage. Sean Lyons, who had scored the winning goal a week earlier for the schools football team, added another point and Matthew Lyons capped off a wonderful performance with a second goal. In the end Lackagh had captured their second schools hurling title in succession defeating Cappataggle by 4-5 to 1-3.
The victorious Lackagh school team that captured the hurling title were: Dylan Buckley; Ronan McDonagh, Jason Reilly; Conor Finnerty, Conor Fahy, Cian O'Connor; Karl Conneely (1-0), Seán Lyons (0-1); Aaron O'Shaughnessy, Matthew Lyons (2-2), Sean O’Hanlon; Barry Callanan (1-1), Thomas Quirke (0-1).
Subs: Adam Kearney, Ruairí Gallagher, Robert Moran, Daniel Knoop, Conor Burke, Jonathan Flynn. Mark McGrath.
