Fergal, Daithi & Kevin feature as Galway win 06-06-2016

Galway 3-27 Westmeath 0-19.

Galway advances to a Leinster Semi Final meeting with Offaly after this decisive win over Westmeath in the Leinster Quarter Final in Mullingar. Fergal Moore and Daithi Burke both started in defence for the Tribesmen while Kevin Hussey made his championship debut in the second half. Leading by 0-17 to 0-5 at the break, the westerners cut loose in the second half as goals from Jason Flynn and Joseph Cooney propelled them into an unassailable 2-19 to 0-10 lead after the hosts had seen Shane Power dismissed.

Conor Whelan claimed the third Tribe major, while Niall O'Brien contributed twelve points for the losers, who battled valiantly but were outclassed by last year's All-Ireland finalists.

Throw-in was delayed by ten minutes as a crowd of 5,263 spectators flocked to Cusack Park, interest intensified by the hosts' tremendous U21 victory over Kilkenny last week, but, on a day of weird weather in the midlands, Westmeath were never really at the races and their hopes went up in smoke once corner back Power was sent off in the 40th minute for a foul on Joe Canning.

Canning had to leave the fray but had already posted eight points. Flynn and Joe Cooney found the net in the 44th and 48th minutes respectively, while  Conor Cooney marked his return to the county colours with a cameo appearance that yielded four points from play.
