Celtic Challenge U17 Tournament

Galway North 3-18

South East Clare 1-16

Galway North recorded their third win in a row in the Celtic Challenge U17 in Gort on Wednesday. A hat trick of goals from Barry Callanan (Turloughmore) and eleven points from Conor Fahey did much to set Galway North on their way, as did a spirited first half performance into the wind at the end of which they trailed by just two points.

Sean Bleahene and Conor Newell shot the opening two points of the game for the Galway men, but South East Clare soon settled. Rian Considine, James McMahon with a goal, Diarmuid Ryan and Killian McDermott all hit the target to leave the Clare side 1-3 to 0-2 ahead on 7 minutes.

Clare were beginning to dominate, but on 13 minutes Sean Bleahene fed Barry Callinan and the full forward found the net to give Galway North a real lift. By the end of the opening quarter South East Clare had built a 1-7 to 1-4 lead, but crucially Galway North outscored their opponents by 0-4 to 0-3 before the break with Conor Fahey shooting 3 of those points.

Owen O Hara with 2 frees and a delightful Rian Considine sideline cut accounted for the South East Clare scores though an interval lead of 1-10 to 1-8 looked scant from their perspective and so it proved in the early stages of the second half. By the 40th minute North Galway had built a 2-12 to 1-9 lead – Sean Coleman fed Barry Callanan for his second goal with Callanan (Turloughmore), Conor Newell and Karl Conneely (Turloughmore) all adding good points.

South East Clare to their credit and despite being set up defensively had the margin back to manageable proportions – 2-13 to 1-13 – on 48 minutes thanks to 2 Diarmuid Ryan frees and a neat Conor McMahon score.  But North Galway finished strongly and 4 Conor Fahey frees allied to a Pierce McDonagh score had the winners five ahead with time up before in the final play of the game a strong run by Martin Cullen finished when a pass to Barry Callanan (Turloughmore) and Callanan duly shot his hat trick goal to wrap up a 3-18 to 1-16 win.
