Turloughmore U21 hurlers reached the 2016 A Championship final in a hard fought semi-final contest in Athenry last Sunday against Ardrahan.

Whilst the scoreline suggests that the victory was a relatively easy one for the men in black and white, nothing could be further from the truth in a sun drenched Kenny Park.

The first half was end to end fare with Turloughmore initially opening the scoring from Damien Holland. Further points from Conor Shaughnessy ( 2 frees), Vincent Doyle and Sean Linnane saw Turlough leading 0-5 to 0-3 by the 13th minute.

The game ebbed and flowed in the second quarter where further scores were exchanged by both teams and by the 25th minute, the sides were level at 0-7 a piece following scores from Conor Shaughnessy and Sean Linnane. A 65 from Jamie Holland and an excellent point from the lively Conor Shaughnessy gave Turloughmore a 2 point advantage at half time leading 0-9 to 0-7.

Turloughmore upped the pace immediately after half time with quick fire points and the North Galway Men then raced into a 0-14 to 0-7 point lead by the 35th minute. Further points were added however Ardrahan were given a lifeline by the 42nd minute with a goal from a free. Whilst the scoreline read 0-17 to 1-07 at the 42nd minute, momentum had shifted towards a potential Ardrahan comeback.

Turloughmore began to weather the storm with further points from Sean Linnane and Richard Doyle and by the 52nd minute led on a scoreline of 0-19 to 1-07.

On the 59th minute Barry Callanan sealed the game with a goal following a hefty tackle from the Ardrahan goalkeeper.

Unfortunately both the Ardrahan goalkeepeer and Conor Shaughnessy saw red cards at this juncture.  A second Ardrahan player also saw red following a poor tackle prior to the end of the game.

The final score of the game came from an excellent Daniel Loftus point which left the final scoreline at Turloughmore 2-21, Ardrahan 1-08.
